Getting Started

I started using my device by just playing with it. My mom called the speech therapist and said, "she is not using it, she is just playing with it." The therapist said, "she is playing with it to see how to use it." The first real thing I said was "fox." My mom asked, "what are you talking about?" Then she asked me a few questions because she didn't know what it meant at first. She finally understood I was talking about The Fox Theater. She didn't even know that I knew what the Fox was. That's the first time I "talked using my device."

Then I started using my device in pre-K. I had a helper come into the classroom and help the teachers learn to include me with my device. I used it more and more. By the time I got to Kinderarten, I was so good at using it that I got in trouble for talking too much. I also started writing stories. They were pretty good.

As I got farther into school, I used the wordpad and the email. I could also make slideshows for class. I used the internet. I used my device for school presentations and to speak at conferences. Now, I use it for anything - the internet, conferences, email and, of course, my blogs and talking to people.

My device is a huge part of my life. There are probably still more things it can do that I do not know. So, if you know of someone that needs a device, please get them one and let them play with it!
