Hello again everybody! This is PRC Ambassador Kristy Lipe from
Memphis, Tennessee! A lot of you may have read the blog post I wrote in
February about my personal health and fitness journey . But it’s May and
I know school is going to get out for summer soon! So I wanted to write
about how important it is to keep building vocabulary and to let kids
practice on their device while they aren't in school for these few months!
And they’ll be set up to have an amazing start to the new school year in
August or September!
I wanted to write about how I learned vocabulary in Unity back in the
1990’s . I use the Accent 1400 with the Unity 144 system which I've
been using this Unity system since kindergarten . That's when I got my
first device , the DeltaTalker, which was fall 1995. Of course John Hollaron
and I like to call it, the dinosaur of PRC now. So I got my DeltaTalker the
week before kindergarten . I went to speech therapy to learn the Unity
system at elementary school then my mom would do a lot of practicing
after school. She would even teach my a lot of the icon sequences during
summer breaks too but we would make it fun though! And that's the most
important thing , especially working on finding vocabulary words with
young children with special needs, make it fun and exciting! My mom
would choose an icon from the Unity manual and we would take about
thirty minutes to go down the list to find in the DeltaTalker!
The other very important thing is to let your kids explore their
devices on their own. This is an awesome way they can build their
confidence and vocabulary skills at the same time! I’m thirty two years old
and I love to find new words in Unity all of the time! Have fun this summer everyone!
