AAC gives me independence

By Kristy Lipe, PRC-Saltillo Ambassador

Hello everybody! My name is Kristy Lipe and I'm originally from Memphis, Tennessee but I’ve moved down here to Long Beach, Mississippi with my parents recently . I’m 33 and I have cerebral palsy but that doesn't even stop me from doing much! I've been the Tennessee PRC Ambassador for a long time but I'm excited to be the Mississippi coast ambassador now! I did Taekwondo for eight years and I'm a 3rd degree black belt and three time world champion in A T A. I have a continuing education certificate in leadership and ministry from Moody Bible Institute . And my other passion is fitness and nutrition! I lift weights and work with an exercise band a couple of days a week.

I love taking my Accent 1400 out in the community because I can talk and cut up with everybody else wherever it may be! It gives me a lot of independence from my parents also! I’ve had a lot of diļ¬€erent experiences being out in public with my talker. Some people have thought I was watching a movie on my tablet before, others have asked me if I was playing a game on my screen. But I like to think of these situations as an opportunity to teach them about assistive technology and how awesome it is! It also allows them to see I’m not mentally challenged, just physically special needs.

I have to admit though, when I was a kid I wasn’t too thrilled about taking my talker everywhere I went. I had to be on it a lot of the day at school and I would want a mental break from it. That got better after I started home school though because I wasn’t on my talker seven or eight hours a day! But I’m excited to live where I can get out in the community with my talker more than I used to! Memphis just got too dangerous to go anywhere really, but down here I’m going everywhere with my talker!
