Inspired by Scotland’s #VoiceBox2024 challenge, this activity celebrates laughter, timing, and communication with classic knock-knock jokes. Learners use AAC to deliver punchlines, express humour, and explore comedic timing while sharing a laugh with othe

a hand knocking on a door

 What you need:

  • Joke books, printed joke cards, or knock-knock prompts

  • AAC devices or communication boards

  • Optional: sound effects, laughter buttons, video clips

 What to do:

  1. Model telling a knock-knock joke on an AAC device. You might say:
    “Knock knock.” → “Who’s there?” → “Boo.” → “Boo who?” → “Don’t cry, it’s just a joke!”

  2. Let learners press buttons or use symbol sequences to tell a joke.

  3. Support expressive reactions: “That funny,” “Don’t like,” or “Again!”

  4. Use visual scenes or prerecorded jokes as needed.

  5. Encourage creativity by inventing new jokes with familiar words.

AAC Model Ideas by Level:

  • 1-word: “more,” “stop,” “again,” “funny,” “mine”

  • 2-word: “my turn,” “more joke,” “that bad”

  • 3-word: “you go again,” “don’t want turn”

Functions Targeted:

  • Requesting: “More joke,” “My turn”

  • Directing: “Make me laugh,” “Go again”

  • Commenting: “That funny,” “Not good”

  • Refusing: “Don’t want more,” “Stop”

  • Interjecting: “Haha,” “Knock-knock,” “Oops!”
