Try to avoid getting wet while modelling core words and phrases in this fun activity!

Block Tower

 What you need:

  • Wooden or cardboard blocks

  • Water balloons

  • Optional: towels, waterproof mat

  • AAC devices or communication boards

 What to do:

  1. Build a tall block tower and balance a filled water balloon on top.

  2. Take turns removing blocks carefully. Try not to make the balloon fall!

  3. Use AAC to comment on the action: “Uh oh!,” “Do it slow,” “That’s fun!”

  4. Encourage directing others or choosing blocks: “Take that one,” “Go slow.”

  5. Adapt the game by adding visuals, AAC button sound effects, or turn-taking supports.

AAC Model Ideas by Level:

  • 1-word: “do,” “take,” “wet,” “stop,” “oops,” “fast”

  • 2-word: “get it,” “do fast,” “feel good”

  • 3-word: “Take that out,” “Come down fast,” “Help me do”

Functions Targeted:

  • Requesting: “Want it fall,” “My turn”

  • Directing: “Take that off,” “Do it slow”

  • Commenting: “Let’s get wet,” “Close one!”

  • Refusing: “Stop that,” “No more”

  • Interjecting: “Oops!,” “Uh oh!,” “Splash!”
