This handout provides a practical roadmap for supporting early generative language development in AAC users through the use of core vocabulary and language functions. Drawing on research by Gail Van Tatenhove and studies of the most frequently used words by toddlers, the resource outlines a progression of core words from the first 8 words through 300+ words. Clinicians, educators, and families can use these word lists to guide vocabulary selection, language modeling, goal development, and communication opportunities across daily routines.
