‘Tis the season, and it strikes me how many diverse ways that my AAC device has enabled me to partake in classic and unique holiday festivities.
Of course, my Accent 1000 helps me to converse with others at gatherings. I love the fact that the device comes with preprogrammed holiday greetings such as “Happy Holidays,” “Merry Christmas,” and “Happy New Year!” Using eyegaze, it takes almost no time at all for me to navigate to my ‘Holidays’ page to access them. Before going to celebrations, I also program my own statements about what has been happening in my personal and professional life to make conversing with others more efficient.
As I use the Windows side of the Accent as my computer and tablet, I have been able to create holiday cards and videos. The ‘click and drag’ key in my NuVoice software allows me to easily manipulate and move objects around a page using my joystick without having to hold a button down while toggling the joystick—an action that is challenging for me. This year, I designed the holiday cards for my family and, as their marketing coordinator, for the book press that I work for.
I also created the press’s promotional holiday video showcasing our recent releases that would make great gifts for loved ones. To do so, I arranged photos of the book covers in Canva. With a Christmas tree background for each, I made a slide for every category and set them to automatically transition. Using Canva’s built-in voice recorder, I recorded my Accent reading a narration for the beginning of the video. I then dragged the soundtrack of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” into the slides that followed. This video was featured on our company Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok.
