Sunshine In The Rain

The doctor gave me the okay to go home from the hospital earlier than planned.  My parents were very excited.  Even though everyone assured me that I was strong enough to go home, I wasn't sure.  Scary thoughts flooded my mind.  What if I fall or hurt myself again?  Will my neck brace break or fall off?

My mom and dad were so happy that I would be home for my birthday that I decided not to let my fears get the better of me.  I wasn't expecting too much for my birthday since I was in the hospital for so long, but my birthday turned out to be very special.  I had lots of mail waiting for me including a couple of birthday gifts from my brother.  There were a ton of well wishers on my Facebook.  And unannounced to me, my grandparents along with my uncles came over on my birthday.  One of these uncles had come from Hawaii for a surprise visit.  It was my first time meeting him and his family.  We had cake and ice cream and a great visit.

The following day, I went over to my aunts where they showered me with love.  One of my sweet aunts made me a delicious carrot cake.

Even though life after my surgery continues to be hard, and I still worry about something going wrong, it is good to be home.  And in spite of my struggles, I am getting stronger every day.  But most of all, I have so many people in my life that make me feel loved and cared for.  And what a blessing that is.

As I write this article, I am driving to St Peters in the pouring down rain.  I was feeling quite comfortable watching the rain through the van window as cars zoomed by when a thought popped into my mind.  I began to wonder about the lives of the people in the cars next to me.  Are they happy or sad? Are they excited or scared? Has their world been turned upside down in a crisis?  Are they coming or going?  I realized that many times when dealing with things in our own lives, we seem clueless to the people around us.  And we don’t seem to take the time to notice.

But as a Christian, I am called to be thoughtful of others around me.  It is easy to be too busy with our problems, focused on our struggles, and with our lives that we miss the opportunity to be a light to someone.  What if we would take a minute to notice the people around us?  We could make a difference.  A simple smile or saying hello can mean the world to someone. Listening, and being there for support can even save a life. A phone call to check on someone or sending a card just to let them know they have value and worth and are thought of.  I want to be more aware of people around me, and not just think about myself. Just think if we affect a life, it could make a big difference in someone’s life.  Let’s be the sunshine in the rain for someone.

This is Life with Kyle and I will talk to you next week!
