“Well,” the regretful words came out of my dad’s mouth as he handed me my blue bath sponge, “I think it is time to get a new scrunchie.” I sadly looked down at my old bath buddy with its thinning cloth. It did look pretty worn. I had celebrated with this scrunchie on its one year old birthday. I thought it was still doing a pretty good job at washing me, but my dad thought it should be retired.
So, a few days later we went shopping at one of my favorite stores, Walmart. I looked through boxes and boxes filled with scrunchies. There were different colors, shapes, and sizes. Some of them were really strange. One of them had what looked like miniature marshmallows inside of them. Why would you want to wash with something with marshmallows in it? Some of them even had polka dots. Oh my… Weird! But I continued my quest for the perfect bath scrunchie.
During my search my mom came back with a full cart of groceries, and shows me one of the smallest scrunchies I have ever seen. It was as tiny as a snowball; although it was blue, pleasantly. I chuckled at its size. Even my warm, oatmeal cookie soap was bigger than this scrunchie. My dad and I both looked questioningly at my mom, but it was settled. My new bath buddy had been found.
Later that night my brand new friend and I were about to experience our first bath together. I happily began to lather up my stomach, when … ouch! The sponge was not spongy at all! I couldn’t even squeeze it. It sure did hold its round shape. “Ouch!” I cried out as I handed it back to my dad.
My dad could tell that it was very firm. He could see the red marks on my chest.
“Ouch! There is something wrong,” I thought to myself. “What is this thing? Not a scrunchie. More like an ouchie.”
Since then I have taken several baths with it, and I still do not like my new, blue scrubber.
Many times life can be really hard, and no one says life is easy. Sometimes new things are not as good as the old things. But what does not kill you can make you stronger. Change can be uncomfortable, but as long as you keep moving forward, and not give up. There is always lessons to be learned and life to be lived.
This is Life with Kyle and I will talk to you next week.
