I was born February 12,1993, a healthy and very cute baby girl. At the age of three my life would be changed forever. On May 27, 1996 I caught Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever from a tick bite which caused brain damage. The doctors said, “I would be normal in a year.” By normal he meant I would be able to talk, walk, run, feed and cloth myself. Everything would be back to normal like nothing ever happened. Meanwhile, God had a plan for me already. Through hard work in PT and OT I would learn to walk again. Plus I would regain my ability to feed and clothe myself. Everybody, including my parents wondered if I could comprehend or respond to any questions they would ask me.
So one day the speech therapist brought an alphabet board and laid it down at my feet. She asked me what my name was? How old I was? What my sister name and age was? I slowly spelled each answer out with my foot. My parents were overjoyed. For two years I would go to speech therapy to try to learn how to talk. My parents finally came to the sad realization that I would never talk again.
Later down the road we found out that I have Dystonia which is a muscle disorder. This causes my muscles to either get tight or loose. Sometimes my tongue sticks out or I have eye spasms
Since I couldn’t talk I learned to used three different AAC devices from PRC over the past 18 years. I’m so thankful for all devices I have had. I have given testimonies at my church, spoke at ladies retreats and in 2011 gave my graduation speech with my device. I have also had the privilege of speaking to students training to be speech pathologists and demonstrating my PRC devices.
My parents were very helpful and supportive all my life. I couldn’t do it without them. My sisters are also a big blessing in my life. I thank God for a good Christian family. I don’t know where I’d be without them.
At the age of 8 years old I began taking art lessons. I enjoyed mixing colors and painting. Since I can only use my left arm, and my hand and fingers have limited dexterity, painting is kind of hard but I manage. I started my business in 2012 called Silent Inspirations. I have my art on note cards and bookmarks. If anyone is interested go to Silent Inspirations Also I hope you read my blog, it will show how I go through trials with God and love Him. I hope this will be a blessing to you.
