My first communication device was the Touch Talker. At The age of five years old from PRC: with 124 overlay. I picked it up right away,
I would not be where I am today without my device. This all happened because of a very dedicated and forward-thinking speech/language pathologist by the name of Patty king DeBaun. My communication device helped me in school all the way through elementary to high school.
I kept up with speech therapy. The communication devices were updated every so often and as needed I bought a new one just the same as buying a new wheelchair as needed. And now I go to Georgia Gwennitt college and have been studying disability law among other things.
And I-m also in the student government association now you are wondering what we do in this organization. Well to be brief, we are the student government for the student body so if something is going wrong the students can come to us and we try to fix it.
The ugly is when people look at me I-m like what are you looking at. Once I was at mall with my aide and he went into a diabetic coma and I was saying help help and nobody would come I was like what are you not helping because I-m disabled.
Because of my physical limitations I am slowed down somewhat in accessing my speech, but I am grateful for a way to communicate. Because I do have a way to speak and a person can hear what I have to say it has enabled me to speak to a crowd such as yourselves.
I do not need someone to interpret what I-m saying. In other words, I can directly speak to someone. It makes me feel good to know that I am communicating person to person with someone. I can use it with computer without the cable making phone calls by myself also sending text.
Because I-m a disabled person here. Get me some help please. Thank you for listening to my story today.
