A Mental Health Journey Perspective

Lyle discusses his feelings with his SLP to submit his blog for Mental Health Month.


SLP: What does mental health mean to you

Lyle: I don't know

SLP: Do you feel like you experience anxiety, depression, anger towards anyone or anything? 

Lyle: Yes, I don’t know. Explain.

Lyle: People talk me date staff me dont date staff. 

SLP: Did the staff say you were dating someone?

Lyle: People tell mess drama

SLP: How did that make you feel? 

Lyle: I’m I feel mad frustrated uncomfortable 

SLP: Did you tell the staff how you were feeling?

Lyle: Her not work more me in his group home

SLP: Does she not work at the group home anymore?

Lyle: yes, old group home

SLP: Are there more people you can talk to at your new group home? 

Lye: Yes

SLP: Have you ever felt anxious before

Lyle: yes

SLP: can you tell me a little more about you being anxious

Lyle: is not

SLP: can you tell us some things that give you anxiety

Lyle: People talk bad me me hear I feel weird people

SLP: What makes you feel weird about people? 

Lyle: People tell me normal, me explain help. 

SLP: Can you explain it a little more to me, what you mean.

Lyle: I don’t know

SLP: want me to move onto my next question, it is going to be another hard question.

Lyle: Yes

SLP: Have you ever felt depressed

Lyle: Yes

SLP: What makes you feel depressed or what made you feel depressed in the past? 

Lyle: I don’t like being disabled 

SLP: What about being disabled is the hardest for you? 

Lyle: Me not normal stuff people at normal want do stuff myself ask people tell do out

SLP: You have to rely on everyone to help you do things

Lyle: Yes

SLP: If you were more independent, do you think that would help?

Lyle: Yes, big help me, me tired tell people I want to do stuff

SLP: It must be exhausting telling someone I want do stuff

Lyle: Yes

SLP: If you were more independent what would you want to do?

Lyle: I want job I want pay off home 

SLP: I like those goals Lyle.

Lyle: I want family my family

SLP: thank you for sharing that with me, I know it's hard to talk about.

Lyle: Yes

SLP: If you had a job, what type of job would you want?

Lyle: Me make video game.

SLP: Would it be a car racing game?

Lyle: Yes

SLP: Would you want to live here or some place else?

Lyle: Myho

SLP: What do you do when youre feeling depressed to feel better

Lyle: I like talk people I like. Go out places. Yes i like hear music.

SLP: Like the music that was playing when we first came in here?

Lyle: Yes

SLP: What are other things that can make you happy when you are feeling depressed? 

Lyle: Watch movie funny

SLP: What’s your favorite funny movie to watch?

Lyle: me funny video on Facebook

SLP: Do you like to watch more funny videos or movies?

Lyle: Watch video funny

SLP: Is there anything else that helps you feel better? 

Lyle: I like me talk people

SLP: What is your favorite thing to talk to people about?

Lyle: Movies. My head pops when I talk about people. I think talk people 

SLP: Do you think it’s easy or hard to talk to people about certain things

Lyle: Hard 

SLP: Is it hard to talk about your feelings

Lyle: Yes

SLP: Do you like to share with people 

Lyle: Yes

SLP: Do you think it's hard because you don't know how to explain it?

Lyle: Yes

SLP: Do you feel like you are getting your message across when talking about your feelings?

Lyle: Maybe

SLP: Do you feel like you are holding your feelings back sometimes?

Lyle: Yes

SLP: When you hold your feelings back, does it feel good or bad?

Lyle: Bad

SLP: Do you want to be able to tell them more? What more do you want to tell them?

Lyle: Yes, I don't know, me not look hard on communication device. Me not look hard to explain communication device.

SLP: Are you missing the vocabulary on your device?

Lyle: Yes

SLP: Do you stop trying when you can’t find a word?

Lyle: Yes

SLP: What do you want people to know about anxiety and depression as someone who uses a communication device?

Lyle: The hard work communication device, I feel mad explain on talk people.

SLP: Does your anxiety come from commincation device feeling like it's hard to talk to people?

Lyle: Yes

SLP: What is it you want people to know about the hard work you put in to talk to people?

Lyle: Me down mad, me I know word not on communication device, Allie Jane. 

SLP: So, since adding this new word to your device, do you think you'll be able to better communicate this new feeling (calm down) to people? 

Lyle: Yes

SLP: Do you think it can give you more time to process how you are feeling when you can’t come up with the right words? 

Lyle: Yes 

SLP: I feel like this new emotion that you added can give you more time to process how you are feeling, and give you more time to think about how you are feeling. Do you think having more vocabulary on your device helps with your mental health? 

Lyle: Yes

SLP: What are things that help you stay happy and don't cause depression and anxiety?

Lyle: me see friends people

SLP: What's something you like to do with them when you see them? 

Lyle: I like to watch movie

SLP: what about time with your family? Does that help you stay happy?

Lyle: Yes

SLP: What do you like to do with your family? 

Lyle: talk funny 

SLP: Do you feel like your mental health has gotten better or worse since coming to this day program? 

Lyle: 50/50

SLP: Has your mental health gotten better or worse since moving to a different group home? 

Lyle: 50/50

SLP: Do you feel that you have the right support when you are in a mental health crisis? 

Lyle: i dont know

SLP: Have you ever tried counseling for your mental health and was it helpful?

Lyle: Yes, and yes, it has

SLP: Do you feel like you can talk about your mental health to your counseling support?

Lyle: Yes

SLP: Do you feel better after talking to your support counselor about your mental health

Lyle: Yes

SLP: what do you do that you think keeps supports your mental health the most?

Lyle: I like do stuff with people. Movies, mall, Walmart. No be at home. 

SLP: Do you have any roommates right now?

Lyle: No

SLP: Is that a good thing or bad thing? 

Lyle: 50/50

SLP: Is there anything else you want to say about your mental healthy journey?
