Run The Hallways

by Matt Huggins, PRC-Saltillo Ambassador

In my sophomore year I had a new one on one teacher and his name is Bill.  He used to be in the Air Force as a bomber pilot.  He was a new teacher.  He was a good teacher and mentor and friend because he taught me my assignments and he also taught me some life skills like how to talk to women and how to treat them.  Sometimes after school we used to run the hallways.  He knew when I needed a push and or when I needed a little break.  He still comes to my house to visit me every other month.

This is a song I wrote to honor our friendship. It is called "Run the Hallways"

Text:
Sophomore year, a brand-new face walked through the door, A one-on-one teacher, but he became much more. His name was Bill, he carried stories from the sky, An Air Force bomber pilot, watched the clouds roll by. He was a rookie teacher, learning every day, But somehow he knew exactly what to do and say. When the work got hard and I felt left behind, He'd help me find the answers and strengthen up my mind.

He never saw the limits that the world could see, He looked beyond the wheelchair and believed in me.

Chorus: We used to run the hallways after school was done, Laughing through the echoes, racing toward the sun. When I needed a push, he knew just what to do, When I needed a break, he'd slow the whole world too. Yeah, we ran the hallways, chasing dreams so far away, And the lessons that he taught me still guide me today.

He taught me all my assignments, helped me pass each test, But the things beyond the classroom may have been the best. He taught me how to talk to women, look them in the eyes, Treat them with respect and honesty, no games, no disguise. He showed me that real strength ain't about being tough, It's standing by your word when times get rough. Every lesson carried farther than a grade could show, He was planting seeds for the man I'd someday grow.

When the road got steep and I was losing sight, He'd remind me every morning I was built to fight.

Years have passed, but some things never fade, The friendship and the memories we made. He's still showing up, just like he always said, Every other month, those words still fill my head. A teacher, a mentor, a friend through and through, The kind of hero that the movies never knew. From bomber pilot skies to helping me believe, He gave me something priceless I'll never leave.

Chorus: We used to run the hallways after school was done, Laughing through the echoes, racing toward the sun. When I needed a push, he knew just what to do, When I needed a break, he'd slow the whole world too. Yeah, we ran the hallways, and we're still running now, Through every twist of life, somehow, some way, somehow.

Bill, you helped me find the strength I never knew, A teacher, mentor, friend—the best I ever knew. And every other month when you come walking through my door, I'm that sophomore kid who's grateful even more. Yeah, we ran the hallways... and we're still running today.
