April is here, time for me to write my yearly autism awareness blog. Yes, I am still using the word awareness vs acceptance, because the group of people who have autism spectrum disorder that I support still need awareness in the public. If you are reading this blog, I guess you are working with the same group too or have a family member in this group. If you don't, you just Google autism blog posts and this one came up, awesome and please stay on this to read through, because I have a tip for you.
We don't see your child or your students on the news solving the hardest math problems, writing a novel at age 14, or doing public speaking. We don't see movies or TV shows with actresses or actors with that kind of autism. But I know that they are doing amazing things in their own way. I know I was amazed when my friend Sam said his first sentence on his tablet. I know I was amazed by my friend Maddy Jo, when she told me a story about how many cookies she sold that year. I know that I was amazed by my friend Griffin when he used his iPad to ask for a break. My tip is to adjust your goals to each person that you work with but don't quit trying and believing in someone's ability to work with AAC. I started to work with my friend Sam when he was in third grade and he just turned 21. I can't believe all the things that he can do today, he doesn't need to use a device just when people can't understand what he is saying!
