Bringing AAC to Church: Speaking at Mass

Posted Mar 1, 2023 - 10:22am

By Brandon Williamson, PRC-Saltillo Blogger

I like to bring AAC into my church congregation. I use my AAC device to read scripture on Fridays during Mass. I started doing this a couple of years ago after asking my mom about it. It is a fun way to use your device with a lot of people in your own community.

When I find out I am scheduled to read at Mass, I am given a reading script. Then I program the scripture that I will read into my Accent 1000 in the notebook. I title the notebook page as the date that I am speaking to keep everything organized. I do this by myself before Mass. I also practice the reading script with my big family or my mom to make sure the speech is clear.

During the service at the beginning of Mass, I walk up the nave to the podium with my mom to read for my church. I put my device on the podium by the microphone and read the scripture. Afterwards everyone comes up to me and says great job. My favorite part is how much I like my church and that everyone at church likes hearing me read at Mass. If you have an opportunity to do something like this in your community, you should sign up! Everyone is patient and kind.

I also have The Lord’s Prayer programmed in my notebook on my device. I use it to say The Prayer along with everyone else at the end of the service.
