My name is Stephanie Head. My cerebral palsy has brought me many challenges in my life that I learned how to handle cerebral palsy.
Some teachers didn't understand cerebral palsy, and they didn't treat me like a normal person. The teachers thought my aides answered the questions on the test and it was all me. Some of the teachers changed their opinions when they realized it was my work. It took me longer to take the exams on my communication board and on the computer. When there were fire drills, I had to get football players to carry me out of the third floor because the elevator quit working. I was very lucky that they did that.
I helped people to close down a liquor store because they didn't want disabled people in the store, and there was a restaurant that wasn't accessible. I was very happy to help people make changes to the restaurant so that it was wheelchair accessible. A Texas airport was worse when it came to disabled people because they didn't let me in it. I think that all countries should let the disabled people do what they want to do.
I believe that becoming an ambassador for PRC-Saltillo would be an incredible opportunity for someone like me. I want to meet people, and I want to talk to them about my cerebral palsy and about my talking device. I want to travel more, to see more places in the world. When Harlan and Marilyn were alive, my parents, they were very overprotective of me, and they didn't let me to have my freedom. And I couldn't express what I wanted to say to my friends and how I felt.
Of course, I miss my parents terribly, but they're passing has forced me to become more independent. Now I'm focusing on living my best life. I am very grateful to you for letting me share my experiences and my story.
Sincerely, Stephanie Valerie Head.
