We’re making a kindness chain to celebrate Anti-Bullying Week. Each link will have a compliment that someone gave or received. This activity helps us practice giving compliments while using our AAC devices.

Strips of coloured paper with compliments

 What you need:

  • Paper strips (approx. 10 cm long)

  • Markers or stickers

  • Glue or Sellotape

  • Optional: pre-written compliment cards, adaptive grips, AAC device

 What to do:

  1. Give each participant 1–3 paper strips to write or choose compliments.

  2. Model using AAC to say kind phrases like:
“You are helpful,” “I like your ideas,” “You make me laugh.”

  3. Link the compliment strips together to form a paper chain.

  4. Encourage group members to share their compliments aloud or using AAC.

  5. Offer adaptations such as partner writing, sticker compliments, or symbol selections.

AAC Model Ideas by Level:

  • 1-word: “like,” “good,” “help,” “put,” “big”

  • 2-word: “help me,” “my turn,” “put it”

  • 3-word: “I like it,” “Help me please,” “Make it big”

Functions Targeted:

  • Requesting: “Help me,” “Can I do it?”

  • Directing: “Put it on,” “Make it big”

  • Commenting: “That’s smart,” “I like that”

  • Refusing: “Don’t do that,” “Stop now”
