Using negative questions with pronoun verb phrases

Objectives

  • The person will be able to speak using negative questions with pronoun verbs phrases

Activities

Speaking

  • Teach that a contraction is one word that replaces 2 words. An apostrophe takes the place of missing letters in the contractions.
  • Teach that the contraction or the 2 words that make up the contraction means the same words
  • Model the negative question phrases. Ask the person to use each phrase in a sentence of their own. If they can’t think of one, model one for them and ask them to try again.

Reading

  • Read the story “A Day at the Dog Park” together.
  • Have the person say the target phrases when they appear in the story using their device.
  • Read the story again and have them read as much of the story as possible using their device. If they don’t know where to find something, model the correct vocabulary and let them try again.

Writing

  • Connect the device to a computer using a USB cable or blue tooth module. Let the person practice writing the target phrases into a word document.
  • Encourage the person to write their own story on a topic of interest using the target phrases.
  • Use the included writing template with your student to write the story using computer emulation. Text can be inserted on each line using the AAC device connected to the computer either with a USB cable or a Blue Tooth module. When one line is full, the student can “tab” to the next line. Stories can be printed and illustrations can be added.

Generalization

  • Print out and assemble to three cubes for this lesson. Have the person practice finding the target phrases on their device by rolling the three cubes. Using the three words, have them find the negative question phrase for those words. If they cannot find the correct phrase, model the phrase for them and ask them to try again.
  • Print out the word cards on magnetic paper. You can get this paper at any office supply store. Cut out the words into individual word cards. Have the person create the target phrases using the magnetic cards on a file cabinet, white board, cookie sheet or other magnetic surface. Once they assemble the phrase, then have them find it on their device.
