Producing one word utterances

Objectives

  • The person will say the word “work” to direct another person to do something.
  • The person will say the word “work” to indicate turning on a machine or computer.
  • The person will say the word “play” to indicate that he/she wants to play with another person.
  • The person will say the word “play” to indicate that he/she wants to play a game.
  • The person will say the word “eat” to indicate that he/she wants someone else to eat something.
  • The person will say the word “read” to direct someone to read a book.
  • The person will say the word “drink” to indicate that he/she wants a drink.
  • The person will say the word “sleep” to request that someone goes to sleep.
  • The person will say the word “make” to direct someone else to make something for him/her.

Activities

Speaking

  • Model and prompt the action words on the device, and by acting out the action word.
  • Act out the word the person says.
  • One person may need to do hand-over-hand modeling with the person, while another person acts out the word.
  • Play a guessing game: Print action words on cards and place the cards in a box or other container. Draw a card and act out the word. The person wins a point if he or she can say the word that is being acted out. -Print out the Core Word game board. You can play this game any way you like. One example would be to have the person roll a dice. The person can move their marker to the square if they can find the word on their device.

Reading

  • Read the book “What Do They Do” with the person. The first time, model the target vocabulary for the person on their device. The second time, as you read, have them try and find as many of the target words as they can as they appear in the story.

Writing

  • Connect the device to a computer with a USB cable or Bluetooth module. Let the person practice writing their target words into a word document.

Generalization

  • Remember that the person may be a motor learner, not depending on the metaphors associated with the icons. Lots of practice will establish automatic motor patterns for these beginning words.
  • The communication partner models the action words to make two or three word phrases on the device. For example: “eat food”, “play game”, “drink water”, “you make” or “read book.”
  • Parent Link Use for homework or to reinforce what was done in therapy.
