Instructions

Use this card with the book “Bo, Max & Sally Like to Eat”. Take as long as you child needs to learn the skills. You may need to model the language multiple times for them to learn it. By modeling the language, you are motivating your child to learn. You may need to add your child’s favorite drinks to their talker if they aren’t already there. This will ensure that the activity is relevant

Steps

  1. Talk about things that your child likes, needs, and wants and what the difference is. For example – “I like to read.”, “I need an umbrella when it rains.” Or “I want to go outside.”

  2. Read the story together. Before reading ask your child to try to remember what happens in the story so they can retell it to you. See how much they can remember. Read it again if they need some help.

  3. At the dinner table, take turns talking about what you like to do. “I like to sing.” Talk about what you need to do. “I need to brush my teeth.” Then talk about what you want to do. “I want to watch TV.” Give everyone a turn.

  • Use the book as a template for your child to write their own story using their favorite animals, photos and friends.

Print and make copies of this card to give to people working or interacting with your child. Ask them to help with the target goal by asking some simple questions. The more your child uses their device in different settings, the better communicator they will be. Fill in the blanks with your child’s name. Keep a copy of the book with your child to use during free time.

Steps

  1. If you are working with _____________, please have them use their device to tell you the following: things they like to do, things they need to do and things they want to do.

  2. In a small group, take turns talking about what you like to do. “I like to sing.” Talk about what you need to do. “I need to brush my teeth.” Then talk about what you want to do. “I want to watch TV.” Give everyone a turn.

  3. Help ____ learn other phrases that end in to + verb. For example, “I want to see.” “I like to play.” “I need to go.”
